Methyl xanthate has no practical value in flotation due to its weak collection capacity.
In terms of the relationship between the floatability of minerals and xanthate, the greater the solubility of the salts formed by the metal ions of a certain mineral and xanthogenic acid, the less likely it is to float. For example, the iron salt and zinc salt of low-grade xanthate have high solubility in water, and it is impossible to flotate pyrrhotite or sphalerite with low-grade xanthate (unless the mineral is activated beforehand). On the other hand, zinc cetyl xanthate is relatively difficult to dissolve in water, so cetyl xanthate can be used as a collector for sphalerite.
